Inspired in part by the unconventionality
of E.E. Cummings and by his subversion
of ossified rules and expectations,
I based my work on three ideas:
musicality, simplicity, and imagery.
Musicality
Emotionally, the syntax that resonates
most with humans is not the syntax of
the classic canons of poetry but the
syntax of music.
Melody and rhythm have the power to
alter the way we feel almost instantly.
Like scent, music taps directly into our
emotions with no need for translation.
I wrote my lyrics trying to simulate
sounds in the mind of the reader,
giving priority to the way the words
would create a rhythm rather than
the dictates of classic poetic structures.
